Julian Weir

Julian works alongside regional and district councils, irrigation schemes managers, and corporate and individual clients, helping them develop robust tools to manage groundwater. With several decades of experience as a civil engineering consultant and hydrogeologist, he successfully communicates complex processes and modelling results to diverse stakeholder groups, including specialist experts, community meetings, council hearings and Environment Court (as an expert witness).

Julian develops catchment-scale groundwater-surface water models (both flow and transport) that help inform water management, planning and policy decisions across New Zealand. He helps clients understand how complex water systems behave, assess future risks and make informed decisions about water allocation, source-water protection and long-term resource management.

His work includes climate change assessments, source-water risk management and the design of monitoring programmes that provide meaningful information linked to management objectives. He also provides technical leadership on aquifer testing programmes around the country in complex hydrogeological environments, and plays an important role in mentoring and developing other water resource modellers.
