Dr Jan Diettrich

Principal Data Hydrologist

BSc PHD

Jan Diettrich is guided by a strong commitment to evidence-based decision-making, environmental stewardship, and clear communication of complex science. He collaborates closely with clients and stakeholders, translating technical insights into practical knowledge to support sustainable water management across communities and organisations.

With several decades of experience as a data scientist and hydrologist, Jan specialises in water resource modelling, environmental systems analysis, and integrating large, complex datasets. His work centres on understanding and quantifying hydrological processes, including river flows, groundwater dynamics, flood behaviour, and the effects of water abstraction on ecosystems and water availability.

He has particular expertise in transforming observational and modelled data into robust decision-support tools using Python and advanced scientific workflows. His background also includes climate, weather, and wind data analysis, creating a broader environmental perspective.

Jan has built strong relationships with regional councils and is recognised for communicating complex modelling results to diverse audiences, from technical forums to community groups. He has delivered projects across New Zealand, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Fiji.
